Chart | Tips For Managing a Family Chore Chart
Chore
charts have been effective in helping parents manage daily chores
for years. Parent’s are able to clearly lay out for their children
the chores they want them to do, when they want them to do them,
and what reward the child will get when the chore is completed.
Chore charts are a fun and easy way to teach children the value
of hard work and commitment.
Managing a
chore chart for your family can be difficult at times due to a
number of different factors. Oftentimes, the chore chart is effective
at first as the children and parents are excited to try something
new. However, after a few weeks sometimes even days, the excitement
wanes and the chore chart quickly becomes a back-burner device
and as a result, the chores aren’t kept up with again.
Be
Committed as a Parent
Probably the
most important thing to do in order to ensure that your chore
chart works for your family is to be completely dedicated to the
system. As a parent, you can’t let up even one day or your kids
will let up right along with you and eventually you won’t even
look at the chart anymore.
Everyone
Should Have Quick and Easy Access to the Chart
This is important
because if you’re the only one that can see it or it is only in
one place in the house, say your refrigerator, then it is easier
to forget it or let it slip your mind for a day/week. If everyone
has direct access to the chart each day it will be more effective.
Assign
Chores Daily
The chore
chart should be created so that it is easy to update. If you can
add or erase chores each day, your children will feel like it
is of the utmost important thing. When something remains stagnant
it’s easy to let it get swept under the rug.
Give
Rewards for Completed Chores
This is an
absolute must. Kids have to receive compensation for the work
that they do or they will have no desire to do the work. Parents
don’t work at their jobs for free and neither will kids want to
work for free. A reward should be clearly identified and assigned
for each chore or week of chores completed whether it be an allowance
or something else that you and your child decide upon.
